  • Digital Smart Meter Offer – NSW Aust

Got a letter from my electricity supplier letting me know that my meter would be upgraded to a new digital meter on 15th March etc.

Their letter had two ways to contact them if I had any questions. A phone number and an email.

    March 7th
I sent an email to the generic email (ie hello@xxxx ) address stating that I did not consent to digital meter being installed however I would consent to an analogue meter and thanked them in advance for their assistance.

March 9th I sent another email as follows:

    Hello Origin,

Further to my previous email I’m contacting you today to inform you:

    1. I have not received a reply to my previous email below.
    2. I require you to provide me written confirmation that you have instructed your contractor to install an analog meter as per my directions.
    3. Until I receive written confirmation of point 2 above (email is fine) I will not provide access to my meter box to your contractor.
    4. I note that your email address hello@xxxxx.com.au is the primary and only email address you have provided for anyone with questions to contact you with regards to your offer.
    5. If I don’t receive a reply from you via email it will be understood that you have withdrawn your digital meter upgrade offer.

Mar 13th I received and email reply with two sentences.
“Thanks for getting in contact with us”
“I have cancelled the request for a meter replacement at … (my address).
No full name of the agent only a Christian name. eg Mike

I sent an email back thanking Mike for their assistance in reaching this new agreement with me that they will not be installing a digital meter at my residence.

I got an email back saying: “Your welcome”. (Mike can’t spell “you’re”)

It’s the result that I wanted and as others who are more experienced can easily see I had no experience of any process other than telling them that I do not consent and let them know that I will stand my ground.

Now I understand that my “new agreement” probably won’t stand in court but I’m happy to have a result and now that I’m here I can learn the correct process as I’ve got to deal with directors ID crap now as I’ve just been personally noticed 🙂

Anyway just thought I share how and what I did.

    Cheers,

Thanks for sharing your success story Merlin!

I just got an email today from our electricity supplier giving me the ‘good news’ that our meter will be upgraded to a smart meter on August 30th 2024. I’d like to send them a reply… I’m not sure if it should be a notice of non-consent, or a conditional reply.

If anyone has written a reply that they would be happy to share with me, or a template, it would be very much appreciated.
