I just had an engineer from BT Openreach (telecoms) come and fix my phone/internet connection but he did a bad job. He fixed the phone line, then moved my router from it’s original place, into the kitchen because, he claimed, it had the best connection there, and there was a fault with the extensions to the original room. I had a to get a private engineer to do a thorough fix of the problem. it’s complicated with extensions to the back of the house.

So could I have made the BT engineer to agree to do a thorough test and fix of my phone/internet and, if he failed, just tell him to get off my property ? or even give him notice that I charge £50 an hour to be on my property (ie either outside or inside) ?

If the original engineer did a bad job, you need to put in a formal complaint to his superiors. When ever some one comes on your property (and it is up to you whether they gain entry or not) make sure you get their business card and name and job title so if they harm you in any way, financial or otherwise you know who to hold accountable. Also ask for their indemnity insurance details and this puts them on notice that you will be claiming for damages if anything that they are responsible for goes wrong and they will most likely make sure they do a job to your satisfaction. Film what they are doing so you have evidence. Tell them you are filming for your protection (you have every right to do this on your own property.

Thanks. That is great advice. I might need to buy a GoPro camera.
