Hi. My hubby and I have just moved and we have been doing cleaning homes for tourist airbnbs. A few of the airbnb owners have said that they can’t take us on without an abn. Because of this, we can’t take on some of the jobs. We don’t want to get an abn so how do we get around this with the owners as they want to claim it on their tax?

One solution is you could ask, “We are operating in a private capacity and unfortunately we do not have an ABN number, is it possible to claim the cleaning expenses as a business expense under a category that doesn’t require an ABN number eg cleaning products?” Alternatively you could only work for those who don’t ask for one. These are just suggestions and not legal advice.

Thank you Morag. That’s a great solution. We will definitely try that. Most of our work is cash only which is great although a few just want to do it “by the books” (whatever the hell that means haha).
