    Hi everyone,

    Changing tax agents.

    I felt to share, I’ve been through the Directors ID non-consent process, had a fine threatening response back after the first round from ARBS, and a ‘you’ve got to comply’ otherwise ARBS will take action letter from ASIC.

    Anyway, I held the line and completed the 2nd and 3rd round – I haven’t had any further communications about this from ARBS or ASIC.

    I had reminders from my previous accountant to complete, I believe a standard footnote on all communications being sent out.

    I changed accountants, for unrelated reasons to the above, and found that I had to register the new tax agent – either via the Digital ID Portal (encouraged by ATO), or by phone (my new accountant is aware of my position on the Directors ID, so has been open and supportive).

    I phoned the recommended number multiple times and would get told there was a high volume of calls, and instead of leaving me on hold to wait, ATO disconnected the call/hangs up – every time.

    What I remembered was that with institutions like this, if you call the number they give for overseas calls you usually get connected and quickly (I used to do this with my bank all the time!). I got through to a switchboard operator, I told her what I was calling for, and I got put through – phone was answered very quickly on both counts (so high volume of calls is a questionable statement), and I was able to give and register my new tax agent within minutes – no other questions asked.

    So little hack, if you ever need to speak with someone at the ATO, use the international call number.

    have they requested anything else or do they still pretend otherwise?

      With the Directors ID? No they haven’t. They haven’t provided a response to my letters addressing the points mentioned.

      Registering the new tax agent? No more information, on the call I confirmed my business name and ABN, and my BC name and TFN, gave them the tax agent reference number, they asked for my phone number to send an authorisation code as a text, which I read out and it was done.
      They didn’t ask anything about the digital ID or directors ID. The lady didn’t even ask if I’d tried to do online via the Digital ID portal.
