Police
About 5 weeks ago I had a discussion with a Cop, who was out front of the house I am staying at. He and his younger partner in crime, had pulled a lady over in front of the driveway. I ask them could they move forward as I need to park the car. They get people turning right as a sign says no right turn 7:30 – 9:00 Mon-Fri at the T section of my street. There is around about a few metres away (it use to be another T), the cars block the T coming in and the cars turning right get held up, which then can back up the round about. The problem is the cars on coming can’t see that sign, so the ones that do the right thing and stop and let them through, then get nabbed.
It’s a full scam money maker, So I ask the cop (Traffic Cop), ‘Hey can I ask you a question?’ ‘I know you just doing your job, but the council turn a T into a round about and now its causing the problem, but it’s the ones blocking the T here and the ones going on the round about that are technically in the wrong. How come you guys don’t go down and book them or help direct traffic? These people are just trying to get to work and they are getting nabbed.’
He looks over to his partner who has just finished booking the lady and says in a mocking voice, “Hey, have a listen to this guy, tell him what you just told me.’ So I say it all again and then the young cop (Y-Cop) goes, ‘Is this your house, do you live here?’ Me: What? I am just doing renovations here. Then he goes, ‘Is this your car?’ Me: I just pulled up in it didn’t I. Y-Cop: I see your passenger side mirror is missing it’s cover. Me: Yeah, it was hit, but the mirror still works. T-Cop: I see your bonnet has salt rust on the paint. Me: Ok, I get it it is an older car, but it runs well, I use to have had a nice car, but I was in a head on, I am going through a divorce and I ended up with the Ex’s old car. I just trying to get by guys, really. T-Cop: Can you open up the car please? Me: What! T-Cop: I notice something, I just want to show you. So I open it and he points out a slight fray in the seatbelt and says, “I am a Traffic Cop, I could book you for that.’ Me: Okay Guys, have a nice day, you keep smiling and I went inside.
I was painting the front room and I saw probably about 15 cars get done in about 35-40 minutes. It is a nothing but a revenue raiser and nothing to do with helping the problem. Cars still block it anytime of the day and I have been getting footage. It needs a keep clear sign on the road and for the on coming cars to stop. I also noticed when they left, the young cop left his coffee cup on the side in the gutter, It’s ok for him to break rules, just not us.
Two weeks later, I pick up my mate, who has been overseas, he owns the house with his girlfriend and have been helping me out. We are in deep conversation and there is hardly any cars on the road. I forgot the time and a lady on coming flash and let me go into my street. Only for me to see the Traffic Cop in the corner of my eye as he was U-turning to park onwards to me. I had pulled into the driveway before he had parked and thought I might have got away with it.
I hopped out, my mate had already headed to go inside and was about to open the boot for his suitcase, when the cop comes right up behind and goes, ‘Are you the driver and can I see your Drivers License please?’ Me: Sorry Mate, I don’t answer Questions. Now I know the look of Pissed off and he his face went instantly there. I was like, Oh he we go. T-Cop: I am going to need to see your Drivers License. Me: Sorry I don’t think so. The adrenaline has kicked in. I can see this guys face losing it. His pen and paper go in his pocket and he starts touching his handcuffs. T-Cop: If you don’t provide me with your license, I am going to have to place you under arrest. From this point on it was kind of blurry and I don’t fully remember what was said between both of us and also I have been in pain as well with back and neck pain, so I was a bit tired and not thinking about what is happening.
Me: Look, just calm down and I am operating in my private capacity and that is a commercial sign that I don’t consent to. Then it was on, he came at me and I was backing up, saying just back up and clam the fuck down. He pinned me up against the fence and was trying to get my arm to handcuff me. I don’t like be touched, with full adrenaline kicking in, so I wrestled my way out of it and got away from. him. I think I was saying Dude you over reacting for something I don’t even agree with. By this time my mate had come over and starting saying what are you arresting him for? T-Cop: He has fail to provide a document and I believe he is a flight risk. I opened the car door and threw my wallet on the front floor and he opened the passenger to get it. I went around the car and was saying get out the car.
T-Cop: Can I get back up? On his radio. Me: Really, back up, for a no right turn. Then my mate girlfriend came out scared and he face got me. She was shaking her head saying without saying, please Ant no, please Ant no. I could see she was stressed, so I said, “fine, you can have the license.’ I gave him the license and said, “I do not consent to this.’ He took my license and cancelled back up. Me: you know what (as i went inside my car to find my phone and held up it to record), I want your Name, Badge and your indemnity Insurance number.’ I was rushing that much as it had escalated that quickly, I don’t even remember what he said.
He gave my license back and I asked how much is the fine? T-Cop as he started walking off: You are not getting a fine, you are getting a summons to court. Me: For what? T-Cop: For breaking the Law Me: What Law? T-cop: Failing to comply with a directive/direction. Me: That isn’t even a Law. He jumped in his car and left.
Look I don’t fully remember exactly what was said as it happen really fast, but I think that was the gist of it. Did I make a mistake and could I have handle myself better, yeah. I already knew this guy was a Robo-Cop, but I was not expecting that and it’s hard fighting the adrenaline when it kicks it. My Dad use to got to town on me as kid and I can’t help but fight off anyone that is a threat. It brings back rushes and I don’t think any other way but get the hell away from me.
So last week I got a letter in the mail. It was half torn open and I could see it look like a fine. I opened it and it was Zero dollars with a Caution in the Levy section. I am gathering that is it. I had started getting all my evidence together, funny thing is I didn’t hit record when I filmed him for his details, so I had been waiting for summons to get the details. I was going to use that he failed to identify himself, he didn’t read my rights, he assaulted me on private property and I don’t consent to that sign.
What have I learnt from this. Always be prepared and try to act like your complying, breathe, relax and then get your phone out and start asking them the questions in a relax, confident voice. We know what to say and ask, but be ready for anything, as It can happen quickly and catch you off guard.
