GST and tax when a sole trader

  • Posted by Kerrie on June 12, 2025 at 4:06 pm

Does anyone know how to deal with GST, I am a sole trader, currently working through the modules for removing tax out of my life and about to start a new job with an employer who is happy to still employ me as a sole trader but says he still has to charge me GST as no way around that, once Ive ticked that box on my last subission to not be doing any more tax returns, how do I get the GST back, anyone else been in this situation? Im still getting my figures together for 24/25 return, Kind regards Kerrie

Hi Kezzie. I am keen to find this out also as i want to ask my employer to do the same. If you wouldn.t mind answering a couple questions. Do you need to give your employer and ABN in order for then to pay yoi as a sole trader ? I think there are ato forms you/they fill out so you can trade with them without an ABN. I don.t fully understand the GST component. Does it mean you have to pay 10% of yr wage in GST? What if you are under 75 grand?

You must register for GST: when your business or enterprise has a GST turnover (gross income from all businesses minus GST) of $75,000 or more (the GST threshold) – to find out how this is calculated see Working out your GST turnover.

Do you receive more than $75k per year?

When interacting with the “system” you can circumvent some rules. Getting your employer to pay without taxing you is terrific but the trade off is paying GST. It is not advisable to try and get the GST back as the ATO may come for the unpaid tax and create problems and stress for you. The only way to pay zero is having your own business.

No ATM I don’t earn $75000 a year I only work three days a week. so if I want to use an ABN and ask if they will pay me as a subby, I guess I would ask for my current rate plus 10 or 11 % super. I would still come under $75000 a year. So does this mean no GST for me? If I did this I could fill out my next return declare nothing and tick the last return box?

But what about my employer does he need to pay the GST for my services?

Also I think there is a an ATO form you can use instead of an ABN stating you don’t have an ABN but still wish to act as a subcontractor, basically trading without an ABN
